Would you like to be part of a Research Study on Genital Warts?

  1. Did you know that sexual contact, even with a condom, can spread the virus that causes genital warts?
  2. Genital warts are small, individual flesh-colored growths, or a “cauliflower-like” cluster of growths that can be found on your genital or anal area.
  3. We are looking for teens and adults who are currently experiencing an outbreak of genital warts to participate in a clinical research study to treat them.
  4. If this is your first time experiencing this type of outbreak or if you have been diagnosed with genital warts and are experiencing another outbreak you may qualify.
  5. This website will provide details about a research study of an investigational treatment for genital wart outbreaks.
  6. Research studies are critical to the process of developing safe and effective treatments and medications. This research study is being conducted in several states throughout the United States under the care of physicians in clinics and research centers.

Research Study for Recurrent Genital Herpes

Background:

Genital herpes is usually caused by Herpes Simplex Virus-2 (HSV-2). Almost 50 million American adults and adolescents are infected with genital herpes, making it one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. The recurrence of genital symptoms is very common, with up to 80% of individuals with HSV-2 experiencing recurrent outbreaks within the first 12 months, following the first episode. Lesions and residual symptoms can be painful and interfere with daily life, thereby reducing the individual’s quality of life.

Purpose of the research study:

ASP2151, the investigational medication, will be compared to valacyclovir, also known as Valtrex®. This research study will compare the safety and efficacy of ASP2151, valacyclovir, and placebo (an inactive substance) in the acute treatment of recurrent genital HSV infection.

Participants will be randomized to one of six study drug arms, having a 5 out of 6 chance of receiving active medication and a 1out of 6 chance of receiving placebo. When an outbreak occurs, participants will be asked to swab the affected area and begin their study medication. They will then be seen in the research office daily until the lesion(s) are resolved. They will be required to maintain a diary, provided by the study center, during this time.

Eligibility:

If you are:

  • 18 years old or older
  • Have recurrent genital herpes

You may be eligible to participate in this study conducted with Dr. Donald Poretz and CARE-ID.

Participants will be compensated $50 per completed visit (up to 11 visits).
